Abnormal Oversentimental Castles [Single Reviews]

Ed Sheeran – “Castle on the Hill”
Most songs prominently feature either piano or guitar, but the driving melody of Ed Sheeran’s new single showcases both. Add to that Sheeran’s impressive vocal range, and “Castle on the Hill” is the perfect teaser for ÷.

Residente – “Somos Anormales”
After making an appearance on The Hamilton Mixtape last year, Puerto Rican emcee René Pérez – better known by his stage name Residente – is back, this time venturing out on his own for a hardcore rap track with a thumping bassline and a subtle Oriental influence. It may still be a while before we hear more from Calle 13, but that’s okay if Residente has a full album on the way that sounds anything like this.

the wldlfe – “Oversentimental”
the wldlfe blew me away last year with “Text Me?”, and while its successor may lack that immediate staying power, the song still slays thanks to a fine contrast throughout. “Oversentimental” feels minimalistic and yet packs in all kinds of layers, with the sultry keys holding everything together. The new tune comes on the heels of the indie pop quartet’s second EP in less than a year, ILY, slated to release on February 17.
