An event to remember, The Secret World of Atlas Black, returns to Columbus
Words: Lieke Ruesink
If you’re in Columbus in August, you’re in luck. Publisher Secret Midnight Press is not just organizing a poetry event, but creating an entire weekend filled with magic. From an album release show to a cat gallery, nothing is too crazy for creatives Jesse Cale and Ashley Dun.
Secret Midnight Press is a poetry publishing company and creative brand from Columbus, Ohio, started in late 2016 by childhood friends Jesse Cale and Ashley Dun. A little over a year in, they have published several books, created merchandise of all sorts, toured in the US and Europe, and hosted their own festival. That festival, The World of Atlas Black, will now be returning for its second edition.
On Friday the 10th of August, there is going to be a ‘CryBaby LoveWonder Pop-up Gallery and Social’. Crybaby is Jesse Cale’s cat, who has a significant Instagram following and fan base. Although the cat himself won’t be there, the event is the place to be for any cat and art lover.
On Saturday the 11th of August, Jesse Cale is doing an album release show for his new record. His ‘Late Night Feeler’ album is a perfect listen for anyone that is up at night unable to sleep, for – these are Jesse’s words – ‘deep feeling magic beings’. The release show will also include performances by Fashion Week, Phangs and Jetty Bones.
Finally, on Sunday the 12th of August, the music and poetry festival The World of Atlas Black will take place. It will include poetry by Ashley Dun, Jesse Cale, Lee Martens and special guests. There will also be a film theater, showing a short film written and directed by Anna Akana, as well as music performances by Mr Morning Sunshine and others.
