When I think of bands on the rise here in Columbus, there are a few that come to mind. One of those is the pure rock-and-roll machine known as The Turbos. This is a band that is showing no signs of slowing down, and this writer for one is one that is excited about what the future holds for them. 2019 is the year that the rest of the world catches the fever that is The Turbos. But for now, Columbus, you can catch their headlining set on Friday night. See you there.
TUNED UP: Can you please introduce yourself?
The Turbos: I am Alex D, vocalist and guitarist of The Turbos.
What made you and your band want to participate in this festival?
We are really close with the boys of Zoo Trippin’, and have been “in the know,” so to speak, about this festival since its inception. More than that, though we really love the concept, and it gives us a chance to learn and experience more of what Columbus has to offer as an art hub.
What is next for you and your band?
We are neck deep in booking a 46-date tour for late spring right now. Looking forward to getting on the road, playing, and seeing more of the Midwest, east, and south.
What is your favorite venue to play in Columbus? Hidden Gem?
It hard to top the atmosphere at Ace of Cups. It’s open and also very intimate.
If there were a Columbus Music Hall of Fame, what three acts would you induct?
Counterfeit Madison, Hoodoo Soul Band, and The Worn Flints.
Who are some local acts our readers should be listening to?
Wheelbarrel, Hidden Places, Mystic Mamba, Miller and the Hunks, wyd.
What is your favorite winter activity?
Staying home haha
What is your favorite winter drink?
Non-Alcoholic: Hot Cocoa
Great Lakes Christmas Ale
I am a huge fan of covers; what is your all-time favorite cover?
Probably Jimi Hendrix’s version of “All Along the Watchtower.” There’s something haunting about how he made it his own. Second place would be The Killers covering Joy Division’s “Shadowplay.”
I also have a few songs that I feel should never be covered; do you have any songs that you feel should not, and if so what are they?
Nah, I think when people cover things it breathes new life into them. It just hurts when people miss the mark on the performance or production of a cover.
If you had to eat one sandwich for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Probably this vegan mac and cheese burger from Eden Burger I’m eating right now.
