Concert Review + Photos : Coheed and Cambria’s North American Tour

Photos and words by Samantha Skapin

A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to watch Coheed and Cambria take the stage at the Agora Theater in Cleveland, OH. Coheed and Cambria had support from two fantastic bands as well, which were Polyphia and Saves The Day.

The theater was already pretty packed by the time Polyphia began their set, and the crowd seemed to be super into it. I’ve seen Polyphia before when they opened for Dance Gavin Dance about a year ago, so I was pretty pumped to see them again. Their sound is almost like Chon, but with a more metal instrumental, which I feel like was a good fit to open for Coheed. These guys are incredibly talented musicians as both guitarists Tim Henson and Scott Lepage would literally shred each song they played. The bassist, Clay Gober was full of energy, and whipped his hair back and forth in a way that would make Willow Smith proud. They played a lot of their more popular songs, including “Champagne” and “Euphoria“, which the crowd loved. These guys are really interesting to watch live, so be sure to definitely check them out and check out their newest release, Renaissance.

Next up was New Jersey’s Saves The Day. As one of the most iconic emo bands to date, the crowd was ready for their set. They started off with a mini jam session between vocalist and guitarist, Chris Conley and bassist Rodrigo Palma, which built up into a song off their 2003 album, In Reverie called “Anywhere With You“. This band had so much energy while playing that it definitely rubbed off on the fans, as they began to sing along with them. They played songs ranging their whole discography, including “E” and “Z” off of their album, Daybreak, as well as their iconic hit “Firefly“. These guys definitely are legends to watch, as they have shaped a lot of the newer “emo” bands today, and it was a treat to see some of the songs I grew up listening to played live.

Last to the stage was what the packed theater was waiting for; Coheed and Cambria. I will be honest and say I haven’t listened to too much Coheed, but after their set, I knew I had been making a mistake for years. Claudio Sanchez came out to the stage with just his acoustic guitar and a single blue light on him, and opened with their song, “Ghost” off of their newest record, The Color Before the Sun. The whole room was focused on him and only him, and a few minutes after, the whole band came out and exploded into “Into Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3”. The crowd had gone completely CRAZY at this point, chanting the words and crowd surfers beginning to form. As expected, Claudio Sanchez’s voice sounds fantastic live and resonated within the whole room. With a monstrous 16 song set, they played old and new songs, including “Delirium Trigger“, “Ten Speed”, and even a cover of Nirvana’s “Drain You”. They finished off their set with their iconic song (and everyone’s favorite Rockband song) “Welcome Home“, and it was a pleasure to watch them end the show with the packed room singing along. Like I said before, I’m not the biggest Coheed fan in the world, but after watching their show, I’ve been converted into one. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out their newest album, The Color Before the Sun and check them out when they come to a city near you!
