Picks from the Cobra [single reviews]

In Winds – “Blindsided”: There is an entire generation that remembers Dashboard Confessional when it was just Chris Carrabba and his guitar. That was Dashboard at its best. Well if you remember that version, In Winds is here to fill that need. Dan Amaro is on to something great with his newest project, and I can’t wait to see where it takes him, as he is a very gifted songwriter and vocalist. This single is the start of a wonderful journey for him, so if you want to join him on this ride, hop on while you still can.

The Scratches – “Cracks”: The Scratches are a local pop-punk band that has gone through a few line-up changes but has always stuck to what works for them. And that is good ole 90s-infused pop-punk. If you grew up on Fat Wrech Chords bands, then this is the band for you. The really cool thing about this single besides the infectious chorus, is that it’s a homecoming for Bethany Myers. She was a founding member but left after two years. And let me tell you she adds so much to this single; her vocals pair so well with Darby and Jimmy.

Forever Unknown – “Manifesto”: The future is here, and it’s about to kick your teeth in. This young alt-rock rock band are primed and ready to make their mark on the Columbus music scene. “Manifesto” is a haunting track with beautiful vocals that are complemented well by the band. This is a union made in heaven. At times this track reminds of The Cranberries, which I enjoy dearly, and I’ll share you will as well. In just a year as a band, they have played with some of Columbus’s finest, won Intsa-band, and even headlined the Steadfast Fest pre-show. Keep your eye on this group. You will want to remember the name.

Dark Spring – “The Last Time”: What year is it? Please tell me. This song sounds like something from 2000-2006. This is a sound that I have missed dearly. This is what Warped Tour sounded like from 2000-2006. The golden years of Warped. This one song has me excited to hear the rest of this album, which comes out in May. Holy Cow!!! I am stoked as shit for this album. That’s all I have for now.

ALBVS – “Sorry”: When you have pop-punk and metal kids going crazy at your show, you know you have something. That is what I witnessed the first time I saw this duo live two years ago at a festival. I also credit this electric-pop act as what kickstarted me to listening to more of that genre. Two years later they have released another gem. I find myself dancing to this track every time I hear it. And the chorus gets stuck in my head for days, and I absolutely love it. This track would fit perfectly on the radio beside Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, ZAYN, and Twenty One Pilots.
