Artist Profile: Miya Folick

Miya Folick is originally from Santa Ana, California. Folick’s journey took a transformative turn when she relocated to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams. It was there that she encountered a vibrant music scene that nurtured her creativity and pushed her boundaries as an artist. This exposure to diverse genres and influences ignited her desire to experiment and develop her distinctive sound.

She started her first band by making a Tinder account with a bio saying “looking for a band.” Folick released her debut EP, Strange Darling, in December 2015, her second EPGive It To Me was released on Terrible Records. Her debut album Premonitions showcased her thoughtful songwriting andreceived critical acclaim. Her music started out inwardly focused, with delicate songs about her personal and romantic life. She still writes about her life but her songwriting has evolved into a powerful force.

Miya Folick’s music is a captivating blend of indie rock, folk, and pop sensibilities. With her powerful vocals, she effortlessly conveys an introspective journey through love, heartbreak, and self-discovery. Her ability to convey vulnerability and strength simultaneously sets her apart from her contemporaries, creating a unique allure. Folick refers to her music as “domestic pop,” aiming to highlight ordinary moments with a sense of significance.

Folick cites iconic artists such as PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush as major influences. She finds inspiration in their timeless melodies and poetic lyrics.

May 26th, Miya Folick released her Sophomore album Roach. Folick had this to say about the title “cockroaches are universally despised but so resilient… I really relate to that”.In contrast to the obscured storytelling found in ‘Premonitions,’ this album embraces a candid and direct approach to songwriting, leaving nothing hidden. As Folick delves further into herself, the project takes on a rawer, more unfiltered quality.

Roach continues from where Folick’s previous EP, 2007, left off. It carries forward the narrative of a woman’s imperfect life, highlighting both the triumphs and struggles along the way, completing her story. This time she’s embracing insecurities, and ditching perfectionism. The album delves into personal struggles and vulnerabilities, though she’s facing them head-on she’s not exactly cured of her problems. Feelings of faith, shame, desperation, and existentialism are pulled together with experimental production. Moments of poppy fantasy and uplifting tracks offer glimpses of light amid the contemplative atmosphere. Overall the new project embraces the messiness of adulthood and navigating through moments of revelation and survival.
