By shooting for the skies, punk band Belvedere takes the formula and rapidly alter it for all the good reasons. With their record Hindsight Is The Sixth Sense, they offer more than 3 chords, more-than-one-dimensional lyricism, and the stories told are cathartic and thought provoking. This is a reason to listen on, and when a band goes the extra mile, especially telling fables within their music, it all comes together like the greatest of characters.

And Belvedere can play. They can play their instruments intricately; they can make music that chimes and expresses diversity. Every sinew of this album takes the breath away. It will not break the charts or the hallowed ground, but it connects wholeheartedly to the punk faithful, and that means so much more than beautiful ceremonies. And the record hits hard. Lyrically—thoughts are explored, reality seems blurred, hope burns itself alive. The words convey broken relationships too; tears are commonplace, and hearts become misjudged for their cruelty.

Musically—the album points to punk rock in a commanding way. Those well balanced riffs and thundering vocals come together smoothly. And it is a listening experience far beyond the normal, basic sound. There are solos present that power on and entice. Beauty does not exist, but who cares about that when the harshness sounds so raw.

“Happily, Never After” starts the record. It is a fast opener with chugging guitars and brazen lyrics. The vocals charge at an almighty pace. “The Ides” describes darkness as a thick coating. Again, the rapid fired riff is pleasing. It does not sooth. “Retina” shows the adeptness of Belvedere, as the guitar play offers a harsh but riveting output. Intelligent lyrics survive the weight. “Good Grief Retreat” is the first single, and it has been well chosen. That bass line and solo create a unifying element which shows this band’s proficiency.

Belvedere rally home messages and intense sounds. Their music also commands attention.
