You’ve heard of music aggregators. You’ve heard of music blogs. You’ve heard of online radio. You’ve used YouTube to casually listen to music.
Problem: What if something strikes your fancy and you can’t listen to it then? What if you don’t have a Post it note? What if you have more note entries on your smartphone than you can accurately keep track of? This is where Cumulus.FM comes in.
I just realized this editorial is starting to read like a crummy informercial so, I’ll try to change that. No one paid us or incentivized us to plug this start up. Blame hypebot for staying ahead of the music trend boat.
Anyway, I like the idea that Cumulus.FM brings to the table. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found something intriguing on the fly only to be unable or too ADD to listen to it at that moment. Lately I’ve resorted to liking Facebook pages of bands as a crude way to remind myself that I need to check out a band.
Cumulus.FM creates “interest” lists that allows you to listen from the source you found the artist(s). While you can search their database for a name (drawing up links to streams from blogs – though they admit this has a long way to go still, Pandora, Rdio, Youtube, to name a few). I didn’t see Spotify on this list. Or Mog, or Grooveshark for that matter.
I like the idea of having a new button on social media sites that share music. Or perhaps on sites where you can buy music, like iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby and Bandcamp. Just click the Cumulus.FM icon and the link goes to a list in your account. Then, you can systematically make more informed evaluations about your musical discoveries down the road. In a world where the music realm is so saturated with talent, an application like this is imperative.
If I have it my way, a Cumulus.FM button would be synonymous with a “share on Twitter / Facebook” icon we see everywhere right now (but only on music related posts of course). The biggest challenge the startup will face is momentum. So, I believe it needs to piggyback on a larger music entity that is open to innovation as a sponsor. It can’t be stand alone. Red Bull Records, anyone?
Cumulus.FM is now in beta testing, and is open for invites. Apply here.
