Elliott Landy Presents: Volume 2 The Band Photographs

Elliott Landy’s photographs of The Band are so iconic that they are often the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about the group. Landy took legendary photos for their 1968 album, Music From Big Pink, and their self-titled 1969 album, but his body of work goes far beyond those images. He is responsible for some of the most famous photographs in rock and roll history and was the official photographer at the 1969 Woodstock festival. His work has been featured in major magazines and has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world for over 50 years. He has even published 12 books solely dedicated to his photography.

Landy’s 2015 book, The Band Photographs, 1968-1969, became the most highly funded music photography book in Kickstarter history. The Band’s history is shrouded in mystery and has been the subject of countless articles, essays, and books, but Landy’s photographs offer a glimpse into the period when they produced Big Pink, The Band, and The Basement Tapes.

Landy had unique access to The Band during this period because they were his friends. He was able to take over 10,000 frames of film of the band, but fewer than 25 had been published prior to the release of his 2015 book. Volume 2 of The Band Photographs includes previously unpublished shots that Landy discovered while going through old boxes of prints. These images capture a particular innocence and excitement that characterized their lives before success began to tear them apart. The photographs offer a rare glimpse into the daily lives of the band members, from mundane chores to sublime moments of creation in the studio and onstage.

Landy’s photographs testify to the camaraderie and love of life that were the seeds from which The Band’s music sprang. The photographs of Garth, Levon, Richard, Rick, and Robbie show a group of friends thrilled with the music they were making together. They transport the viewer back to the band’s homes in Woodstock and invite them to gather on Levon’s bed as they discuss lyrics for Rag Mama Rag or King Harvest.
