Roundup: Heaven, Angels, and illuminati hotties

“Heaven Is A Place In My Head” explores how summer can feel endless when you are with the right person. Vocalist and guitarist Christo Bowman sings about daydreaming and never wanting the sun to set.

“This song is special to us because it came so close to never existing,” vocalist Christo Bowman says. “In May of last year we were all in the process of experimenting with writing songs together over the internet. We jumped on a video call and I played the guys this piece of music I’d written the day before. I was really missing performing and wanted us to create something which channeled the energy of one of our live shows. We wrote the melodies and lyrics, and it then sat in our dropbox for several months, essentially forgotten. Then in January of 2021, as we were nearing the end of our recording process, our producer played the demo and we all looked at each other and collectively thought, ‘This is amazing, why haven’t we recorded this?’”

“Angels” by LP

“Angels just feels like a song that’s been roaming around in my head. I felt so filled up with love the moment it became clear, maybe it was angels who actually wrote it,” says LP.

The track was produced by Nate Campany (Tove Lo, K.Flay, Christina Aguillera) and Kyle Shearer (Becky G, Tove Lo, Carly Rae Jepsen), collectively known as Valley Girl, along with by the album’s executive producer, Mike Del Rio (Kylie Minogue, X Ambassadors, Skylar Grey).

“MMMOOOAAAAAYAYA” by Illuminati Hotties

Reclaiming one’s own authority is a central topic for Sarah Tudzin. The album follows last year’s FREE I.H.: This Is Not the One You’ve Been Waiting For, a mixtape Tudzin self-released in order to buy her way out of a frustrating label contract.

“You think I wanna be a part of every self-appointed startup?” she hollers on the blistering “MMMOOOAAAAAYAYA.”

It’s all pulling toward that chorus—“Mmm/Ooo/Aaaaa/Ya ya”—the one-sided onomatopoeia of a conversation she can’t bear to keep having, while meanwhile her mind is racing, racing, racing through marketing strategy

The final line hits with a Cruella de Vil laugh, and the total gracelessness of truth under capitalism: “If you’re not laughing, baby/Then you’re not making money!” Mmm-mmm-mmm.
