Vagabonds – Liminal Space

“I need good news.”

The opening line of the title track, “Liminal Space,” by Vagabonds could easily be kind of biographical for the year 2020 for many people given all the uncertainties stemming from the global pandemic. The EP opens with the instrumental track “Breath,” which orchestrates an ethereal atmosphere that is consistent from start to finish. Each song fluidly flows in to the next and allows the listener to get lost in the beautifully arranged EP as a whole.

Musically, the EP creates a sense of imagery that is perfect for a late-night drive alone—just you, your thoughts, and the open road. The string arrangements really add depth to the lyrical content, especially on tracks “Undone” and “Patience, Longing.” The final track, “Leaving Quietly,” is the perfect closer for the album, as it carries a sense of finality with it (it is also an instrumental track like the opener).

Lyrically, there is a sense of melancholy that is described as “about the space in between the grief and the healing.” This adds a harmonious depth to the aforementioned musical soundscape. The production quality is fantastic with a very solid mix on both the vocals and instrumentation.

Overall, this is a magnificent work, and Luke’s vocals really bring the airy and atmospheric arrangements that craft each song perfectly to life (I get some serious Peter Gabriel vibes in a very good way). It’s hard to really put into words how good this EP is. As cliché as it may sound, you really do have to let the music speak for itself. The single complaint would be the length. With a product that is as good as this EP, it can only leave the listener longing for more.

Liminal Space is available for streaming via Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music, or their web-store to purchase a CD or cassette.
