In my young life I have come to learn that there are those bands that you remember where you were when you first heard them. And you remember what you were doing. Those are the bands that generally tend to stick with you. Beach Slang is not one of those bands. I have no clue how I first came across this amazing band. All I know is for the last eighteen months or so they have constantly stayed on my radar and I have been looking forward to a full length forever. I am so glad that time is finally upon us. For the simple fact music needs a band like Beach Slang at the moment.
Beach Slang has not been a band for that long. However in their short lifetime they have released two stellar Eps. That was all the music I had of this band until now and believe you me I listened to them both like a maniac. The music this band makes is nothing new or special, it just seems right and brings forth lots of raw emotion.
Upon first listen to The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us, three things came to mind. The First was how much this sounds like what a new Replacements album may sound like. The next two have to do with Columbus. The first of which is how this album brings to mind my nights of hanging at Rumba Café a few years ago. The third is actually tied to that. It was at that bar that I first came across a band called Two Cow Garage, a band that holds a special place in my heart. A band that I respect very much. There are times that this album reminds me so much of TCG and I love that.
Going back to the raw emotion that is coming from this album there is a line that I feel totally represents this band and life right now, well at least for me. In the song, “Ride The Wild Haze” there is a line that goes, “I feel most alive when I’m listening to every record that hits harder than the pain”. That is money right there. We all have those records like that. Records that we turn to I order to escape the pain, to deal with the pain. For some, because of that, I feel this album will be that record. I mentioned the band Two Cow Garage above. There is a track,” Too Late to Die Young” on this album that easily could be a Two Cow song and I absolutely love it. It could be a tribute to them. The Vocals are similarly close to Micah Schnabel’s vocals and that is a beautiful thing.
I was reading on the Tumblr page for Beach Slang and their vocalist posted a nice thank you to the fans. In this note he talked about all that went into making this album. But what really caught my attention was how he also talked about not losing hope and just going out into the world and doing you. I know bands say that stuff all the time but there was something about how he worded it. It came off as very sincere. In the song, “Young & Alive” there is a line that sums that up I believe. It goes, “Go punch the air with things you write.”
I expect this album to show up on a few year-end lists. I know it will be on mine. If rock and roll needs to be saved, this is the record to do that. This Is your next favorite band. BELIEVE THAT!
