When I think of Columbus and music, one of the first acts that come to mind are The Castros. I moved here in 2009 and one of the first local acts I met was The Castros. The husband/wife indie Folk act has been making music since 2009. Along the way they have had friends play with them from time to time, but the core has always been the two of them. If you have never seen them, they are an act not to miss.
Editor’s note: Columbus Covers Columbus is a new festival in which several local acts will perform sets full of material from other Columbus (or sometimes just Ohio) acts they admire. It takes place at The Shrunken Head January 19-20th.
Pricing is as follows:
$7 for 21+
$9 for under 21
$10 for 2 day pass for 21+
$15 for 2 day pass for under 21
TUNED UP: Why did you choose to participate in this event?
The Castros: I’ve always thought it’d be awesome to do a show with friend bands covering each other! Such a cool concept. So, when Tony came out with the idea of Columbus covers Columbus we immediately jump at it!
TUNED UP: Are there any covers you are hoping to hear?
The Castros: I want to hear a miz of crazy unexpected stuff mixed with basic staples. Like Heroes Like Villains, To Kill a Monster, Ranger Danger and Rascal Flatts, Beartooth, Twenty-One Pilots lol
TUNED UP: We all know of the Promowest Venues and Ace of Cups and Rumba, but what are some lesser known venues that you enjoy?
The Castros: Java Central Café and Roaster hands down! Awesome place for music & arts, and great coffee haha. We also like Brothers Drake, Notes, Skully’s, Woodlands, Rambling House… the list goes on. So many places for live music people need to go out and support! The Shrunken Head (where this show is going to be) seems to be an awesome place nowadays! We haven’t played there since right after they changed names from Victoria’s Midnight Café, and we are looking forward to it!
TUNED UP: Who are some local acts that our readers should be listening to?
The Castros: Wow so many!!! From the top of my head Get In The Ark, To Kill a Monster, Ex-Nihilo, Brady Fulton, Luke Mossburg, Mark Zonakis, Ezekiel (Delpin sisters), Lil’ Red & the Rooster, Anna Ehret, Chris & Rose, Daisy Roberts, TOWNeS, Out of The Pine, Deadwood Floats and Fellow Hollow, Ever Burning Bright… haha so many many more. If you are reading this please go and check these bands, and go out to more shows and meet new bands!
TUNED UP: What act(s) are you most excited to see at this festival?
The Castros: Ex-Nihilo, Zoo Trippin’, Ben Marshall, Keating, Ever Burning Bright, Jeff & Paige and all the bands we are playing with.
TUNED UP: If you could induct an Ohio Musician into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, who would it be?
The Castros: Hmmm that’s a great question. Of eligible artists Tracy Chapman is way overdue! Over The Rhine would be a great addition as well.
TUNED UP: Do you think Tony Casa will remove his shirt during Zoo Trippin’s set?
The Castros: As you might already know, Casa means “House” in Spanish? So, I’ll call him Tony In Da Casa from now on. Boom! Haha in regard to your question, yes, I’m sure he will. Kylo Ren style.
TUNED UP: What is your favorite winter beverage?
The Castros: Iced Vanilla Lattes haha.
TUNED UP: What is your favorite winter activity?
The Castros: Sing “Informer” by Snow while it’s snowing ☺
TUNED UP: Do you want to build a snowman?
The Castros: I want to build a snowhorse!
