Preview: Eclectic night ahead with Massive Scar Era, Xioma, and more at Spacebar.

Three of the most perpetually under-the-radar acts in Columbus along with one of the more unique acts to grace the Spacebar stage in recent months will share a bill Wednesday night, August 28th in Columbus!

You might remember Massive Scar Era from our review of their release Color Blind last fall. The Egyptian folk metal quartet has members from Cairo, Egypt and Canada. Don’t let their geographical origins be the most interesting thing you know about this band—check them out on Wednesday. Their sound is at times otherworldly and at other times like a round of throat-punches. The “Interlude” track off their latest is a lesson in zoning out to some Arabic sounds not often heard in metal bars—and an opportunity to get mellow on a Sunday evening as I prep for work the next day.

This Wednesday also functions as the release date for Xioma’s new single “Normal.” This, the alter-ego of Aubrey Liston, is a fitting addition to the lineup given her commonality with Massive Scar Era’s unconventional genre-context of stringed instrument. Xioma is “cellopunk.” She has blown minds more than once, playing in both punk venues and EDM-centered clubs. Xioma will be releasing her record titled When I’m 30 (I’ll feel secure about everything) on September 20th.

The bill will be rounded out by indie pop trio The Mean Somethings and The Castros. Both acts also appeared on our Steadfast Festival preshow in March of this year—and thoroughly entertained the crowd present at Donato’s Basement. The Mean Somethings are fronted by Chelsea Ravenn, a singer with the ability to spit bars on the same level as indie pop melodies. She’s backed by two pals, to complete a trifecta of a flashy ensemble. The Castros, who booked the show, are always a good time and will warm your heart. Be on the lookout for Marco’s dragon hoodie!

Doors open at 8pm, only $5 advance ($7 at the door). RSVP here and invite your friends!
