Richmond, VA’s Tyler Meacham makes an unassuming brand of Americana influenced pop music that doesn’t claim to be anything grandiose or groundbreaking. It just is. And therein lies its appeal.

“All I Wanna Do” is a midtempo piano driven number that sets the tone for what’s to come. Earlier in the fall, we wrote about his single “Say Yes,” which has more of a memorable hook, but this song is even more unassuming than the lead single. The layers to the song are traditional yet more complex than it might seem.

“Denver” flirts with dreampop with effects-laden piano, before getting into traditional Americana territory. The song keeps changing once I think I haven it figured out, but it does so with ease.

“YKNAM” has the most attitude expressed thus far on the EP, which isn’t a ton, but in the context of Meacham’s relaxed yet steady vocals makes quite a statement. “You know nothing about me!” echoing in the background of the groove is another firm exclamation point in the explorations of life and love expressed on this EP. I like the contrast between the emphatic background vocals and Meacham’s matter-of-fact way of singing that line. Even her vocal runs seem down-to-earth, which only serves to drive the point home further.

“Moving On” is a breakup song that is driving, with the beat taking a backseat in the mix to Meacham’s vocals in the mix. The melody and Meacham’s tone is resolute and determined.

As already mentioned, I’ve reacted to “Say Yes” before. However, it bears repeating that I enjoy the clash of the pop vocals and the crunchy of the guitars on an atmospheric backdrop. Contrast this with the piano driven closer that is the title track—a simple ballad with some production to add some further layering and atmosphere. This isn’t your typical heart-rending ballad, but it’s still effective.

If I sound like I’m repeating myself—good. Tyler Meacham has a classy, down to earth way of existing between sounds that are closer to one another than you’d guess. The Property EP is a release full of unlikely earworms. Also, Tyler seems like the kind of person, just from the sound of the record, that I’d want to hang out with. That’s always a good thing, right?
