Authority Zero – Ollie Ollie Oxen Free

Punk is in a good place. Arizona band Authority Zero do not disengage from day-to-day problems but have created a record detailing the wars and woes. The act plays loud songs which feature lyrics that push the boundaries of what punk can achieve. The melodies have been meticulously crafted also, and it all meets expectations and more, propelling the band onto a platform they do not expect to be.

The album is not for the people who like slow waltzes into paradise. It is a record that tells tales of downtrodden times, melancholy, and politics. The act tries to nullify their feelings on world problems, but they cannot watch everything detach from the seams, and they need to, for their own sanity, create music that teaches and inspires. And every element has its place. The quick fired riffs are breakneck as we expect, the sudden screams offer moments of raucousness, and it comes fast like a beam of light.

The record is called Ollie Ollie Oxen Free, and it empowers. Nowhere Land is a volatile track, showing off those lyrics which highlight hopelessness. The riff is pleasing and has been constructed well. Fire Off Another does not slow down the tempo, it elevates it. Again, musically it is engaging, and the lyrics seem to veer close to a rant. The Back Nine shows the band’s capabilities at playing their instruments well, and they scream for a revolution here. Have You Ever is a pessimistic and driven song which goes deep into the ways of life. The musicians hurt, and the song is a symphonic reach for aid.

Authority Zero take punk and increase its accessibility with tracks explaining heartbreak and the downsides of life. They’re able musicians too, playing their hearts out for change and somewhere to rest their tender bones.
