Against The Current – Fever

New York band Against The Current bring a youthful embrace to the pop rock scene. Their brand of high energy music does not toil or boil over, it connects well to the people who choose to listen on to a burgeoning sound which can only gain more attention. Led by the ever vibrant and talented Chrissy Contanza, the act turns the keys and spreads their wisdom far and wide on new EP Fever. It is a dream EP that is punchy, unapologetic, and sombre pushing the limits of emotion and grandiosity.

Throughout the EP tensions do rise, hearts become compromised, and there is an undercurrent of sadness and an ache in Constanza’s voice when she sings about derailing love and a crumbling world. And she does not always bask in the light, as darkness creeps in, and if it was a human, it would boast. At moments, though, jubilation streams in like a joyous river.

Some songs are loud, some songs are low. This balance is gratifying and extremely diverse, which shows that Against The Current can focus on both elements. “That Won’t Save Us” starts the record off in an abrasive embrace. Contanza sounds revitalised and angry, and with the thunderous percussion behind her, she is a warrior. The song slows down, and she shows her wonderful voice fully. “Weapon” again shows the instrumentals in their true light, and Contanza sings the chorus with verve and vigour, exercising her vocal cords wholeheartedly. “Shatter” slows down the tempo but does not kill the momentum, and it is an emotional whirlwind, showing Contanza as an angel in a shattered world. It is a turning point for the band.

With Fever, Against The Current brings forth an angrier, proficient sound. They are the real deal, and they know pain and misfortune.
