Hawthorne Heights – The Rain Just Follows Me

Ohio heroes Hawthorne Heights express poignancy on their record The Rain Just Follows Me. The rock four-piece do not disconnect from their emotions at any moment as they plunge all their strength into this album. The concept is not different either, and the songs don’t sound heavier or cut off from a style that this band has remarkably honed. Being around for a substantial amount of time only makes you more suited to the cause, and the members of Hawthorne Heights, are wholeheartedly in it for the long haul.

There are emo sounds connected to the rock formula here. Substance over style. And the whole output points to struggle and hardship, love being scraped from its bones, and a world becoming frayed. With The Rain Just Follows Me, this renowned rock band, conveys throughout the record their grievances and points of truth. They also bind together lyrics that conjure up memories good and bad, lyrics which feature anecdotes of days gone by, days spent weeping to the sounds of the birds in the morning shine, or at moments in the grey.

Hawthorne Heights manages to make music catered for the disenchanted. The people pummelled by misery but find solace in the sound. These people often engage when art seems so tangible, when it speaks to them. This band, play music which materialises into beauty even when it can be sad at the same time.

Constant Dread  starts the record off. Darkness exudes throughout the song. That riff joins up well with the impactful vocals. The percussion is like a fast heartbeat. Lyrically, it is a solemn strike at realism. Holy Coast sounds like a song straight out of the 90s. The riff slows down and releases the vocals. A mighty chorus bubbles through. Thunder In Our Hearts  is a technical breath of fresh air. Again, it sounds like a song created to enforce nostalgia. Dull Headlights cuts deep. It describes hospital fever and sleepless nights. It’s a masterful stab at song writing with bourgeoning riffs.

Hawthorne Heights strikes again with urgency. The record echoes truth.
