julien baker – b-sides

These 3 songs empower to say the least. Singer/songwriter Julien Baker, provides an insight into her mind, a crystal ball effect, while she plays her acoustic guitar with diligent precision. And the enigmatic, stylish, solo artist knows a thing or two about losing hope and she knows pain and misfortune on a large scale. Throughout her lyrics, she conveys loss, hopelessness, the barricades she must break to get to the idyllic side. These B-sides aren’t one-dimensional fillers either, they’re fit to be on a full collection.

3 songs only. 3 songs that could be the most important. Baker sings about drinking too much, and the darkness. She also commits to memory and tells us that she’s not fine. Her wonderful voice echoes, and it pristinely connects to the power of this world. The singer is an able song-writer and should be applauded for her work ethic and dream-like vocals. And the subjects are dark. There’s no doubting that, but they’re needed and they’re relevant.

The EP starts with Guthrie. An acoustic chime comes in and Baker begins to sing about seeing the world differently. It’s a formidable beginning, as the singer doesn’t hold back, even though it isn’t loud. Vanishing Point is another acoustic charm. Baker describes a chaotic drive home, and her voice is finely tuned here. She wants validation. Mental Math is more upbeat and settles in lyrically. Baker curses at the sun. It is a poetic masterclass.

These songs are more important than you think. They may be B-sides, but they carry so much meaning.
