Tuned In-Spin These New Releases, August 26th

It’s been a big day for new releases. In the metal and rock world, there are new albums from Muse and Becoming the Archetype as well as a new single from long retired math metal band Botch, forcing me to ask, “Is it 2005?” In the hip-hop world, the long-anticipated Roc Marci x Alchemist collaboration is finally available for wide streaming. And one of underground hip-hop’s most celebrated and mysterious rappers Mach-Hommy surprise dropped a new mixtape. Read on for a quick review of these projects along with some other great music that came out this week.

MuseWill of the People

It’s over the top. It’s excessive. It’s bombastic and dramatic. It’s a bit much. And it’s a whole lot of fun. It’s Muse. If you aren’t already on board with these glamorous rock titans, this probably isn’t the album to jump on board with. They approach music with full maximalism. But if you’ve stuck with them over the years and are willing to lay down expectations that Matt Bellamy might tone it down, then you’ll certainly enjoy the ride. Stream the new album HERE.

Becoming the ArchetypeChildren of the Great Extinction

After ten years, the Christian Death Metal legends return. This is their first album to feature the return of vocalist/bassist Jason Wisdom and drummer Brent Duckett, since 2011’s Celestial Completion. Children of the Great Extinction is both brutal and epic, featuring orchestral strings and well placed clean vocals along with plenty of death/black metal growls and screams. The album tells an epic sci-fi concept that falls in line with the best of post-apocalyptic futurism found in popular media today. And the dynamism found from track to track makes it an easy relisten. Becoming the Archetype are back and in a big way! Stream the new album HERE. Read our full review HERE.

Roc Marciano x AlchemistThe Elephant Man’s Bones

This album actually came out on digital two weeks ago with two extra tracks, for anyone willing to lay down $40 for a download. But the hype is real, and the fans are there for it. Alchemist switches back and forth between drummless and drum-filled beats, all the while creating his signature mesmerizing and experimental soundscape. For those haters claiming it’s not hip-hop without drums, Alc comes with “Bubble Bath,” a soft title for a hard track. Roc drops lyrics like he’s a thesaurus. It’s a wonder to listen to. And there are some great features from Action Bronson and even Boldy James. Ice-T even manages to step off of the set of Law and Order long enough to get in the booth and prove he still has it. Mach-Hommy-Dollar Menu 4

Surprise hip-hop heads, the reclusive and mysterious Haitian rapper dropped a new mixtape today! The self-produced mixtape, Dollar Menu 4, is a collaborative effort with That God Fahim. Following 2021’s eclectic Pray for Haiti and Balens Cho, this is instantly a more accessible project. This may or may not be preferred, depending on your taste. But the skill can’t be denied as Hommy and Fahim trade bar after bar with a hunger to prove they are emcees not to be ignored. Stream the new album HERE.

Ezra FurmanAll of Us Flames

On “All of Us Flames,” Ezra Furman channels her best impression of Bruce Springsteen along with taking a cue from contemporaries like Sharon Van Etten to create vintage, emotional, soul filled rock and roll. Furman continues to explore with vulnerability her experiences as a trans woman, which makes this not only a fun album but an important lens through which to understand trans and queer life.
