sunsleeper – while you can

Optimism seems to be shattering into intricate pieces on this release by Sunsleeper. While You Can is an album that will hook the listeners into its primary core, even when they try to detach from the experience. It’s a focused record, too, and one supplying many moments of melancholy, times of grace, and sometimes it feels heavy on the heart. There’s no rush of thunder though, as everything is on a calm level.

Though there’s a calm feeling surrounding this record, the lyrics are detailed enough, and are like introspections, breaking in, and proving that the band is certainly downtrodden by a series of events. This all comes in like crashing waves, and there’s no halt in terms of subject matter. That’s a testament to the band’s lyrical talents, their emphatic portrayals.

While You Can isn’t a story of bliss, but it’s very much a story-driven, guitar driven, colossus of a record, pushing this band to the limits of rock. Breaking boundaries is what bands want to do, wither it be within the realms of popularity or when it comes to stretching the musical muscles to the max. Sunsleeper have something about them, technically and musically, lyrically and they’re brave to the bone.

Porch Light examines life from the perspective of a broken man. The rhythm is purposeful and the story gathers more content. It’s an evocative start. Blemishes begin in the same vein, and the fable keeps on giving, and those guitar driven moments arrest the heart. It isn’t ferocious in any way, but it still offers turbulent storytelling. Anywhere is an acoustic track, focusing on the downsides, and the protagonist craves closure here, while his world collapses. Every lyrical foray on this album blooms into something more.

Sunsleeper is a band producing music which is sorrowful and relevant, not only to the disenchanted but the common man.
