Shape Of Water exudes a certain style, and their music has the dynamism that many bands lack, that musical urgency. Their album Amor Fati is a collection of songs brooding in their execution, but breath-taking in their complexity. The album anchors towards art-rock and rock music as a whole, and the tracks have the power to inspire and to engage. From the onset, the record commits to grand lyricism and raw vocal work, as well as beautiful instrumentals.
The band is equipped to take on the storm of scrutiny, and they’re focused enough to make a name for themselves, and Amor Fati breaks conventions and doesn’t rely on spontaneity, as it convinces with its musical prowess and strong foundations. The complexity is refreshing, and the outlandish themes are original too.
As records go, this is special, and the music is so technical and complex. The riffs have something different about them and aren’t normal in their progression. There’s 10 songs to consider here. Falling starts with a great riff and the vocal work is raw but revealing, conveying stories of death and cold hands. Don’t Leave Me In The Dark starts with a piano vibe and it slowly builds up. Lyrically, love has its place, but the darkness begins to shroud everything.
Numbers opens with a soft riff and louder vocals. The chorus blazes through, and the song builds up into a frenzy. The lyrics again are insightful and vivid. Words In Eternity takes things slow, and there’s not much in sudden movements, but the lyrics explain so much in terms of the band’s mindset. It’s a glorious swansong.
Shape Of Water has delivered a special album, one atmospheric and lyrically absorbing.
