Columbus music scene veteran Jocef (also known as the namesake of the Jocef Michael Band and the vocal feature on the Twenty One Pilots deep cut “Be Concerned”), seemingly out of nowhere, has dropped a new R&B/pop banger with hip hop artist FPtheSaiyan.
“Raindrops” is poignant and ethereal. It seems to be a least a little bit autobiographical. It speaks to the tension many of my fellow millennial creatives feel. While I’m content to sit in a producer role behind the scenes, I can’t help but relate. 14 years of grinding wondering where exactly I stand now and what I’m supposed to do now. Jocef wrestles with many of these same themes in this song and seems to be moving towards some sort of headspace of being content with whatever results his creative output will yield.
The song isn’t without angst though. My favorite line might be “tried to ghost me / now its a seance.” I simultaneously relate to and feel called out by that line. The tension between an industry that can feel transactional while trying to keep up genuine relationships, while knowing you can be better in your follow ups while simultaneously being frustrated that people don’t get back to you!
The realest line in the song though might be “I love chasing pain.” Creatives can be addicted to the thrill of the chase while constantly being brought low by being burned and let down.
The production on this track is immaculate. It’s geared toward a crossover audience for sure. “Raindrops” is a track we recommend. Give Jocef a follow on Instagram and then check out the short film for the song below:
