February kicked off with a rockin’ good time at one of the best small venues in Columbus. The emphasis in this article will be on Midnight Spin and Strangers in Daylight, since Forest and the Evergreens were given a glowing review by us for a show they did less than a week before. It should be noted that Forest and the Evergreens are consistent in the quality of their performances though! Anyway…
Midnight Spin is a straightforward rock n’ roll band out of Brooklyn, NY, and a new favorite of Scarlet and Grey booking agent Chris McLafferty (who also happens to contribute to I AM TUNED UP). Regretfully, their early time slot resulted in a small-ish crowd being exposed to their throwback rock tunes, but everyone there was into it. “Lion Run” and “Colors” were two highlights. Thankfully, those who showed up late were treated to a short set by the band to close out the night, which from what I heard got the crowd moving.
Strangers in Daylight played the middle slot, and they met my expectations. This was my first time seeing them play in quartet form. They have added a second guitarist and vocalist, Ryan Dean Horn, a member of fellow Columbus rock outfit Karate Coyote. They played a nice mix of new and old songs, the majority of the set being tunes taken from their most recent release, Letters of Transit. Personal favorites “Forsythe” and “Virgin Mary” thankfully made appearances, as well as a number of new songs that got me pumped up for their upcoming release, which is currently in its recording phase.
I missed the portion of the evening from about the two songs into Forest and the Evergreens’ set (I still love you guys! Really!) but here are some photos to whet your appetite for some visuals to go with this review:
