So this EP actually came out a while ago, but a recent burst of creativity from the band forced me to revisit this catchy EP. The scene is bursting with talent in the indie electronic pop scene. The dreamy Trails and Ways is one of these bands, and they hail from the West Coast. Perhaps because of just how many peers they have, the band recently launched an online exclusive video game to go with their all-Spanish “Como Te Vas” on their official website. Due to browser limitations this reviewer hasn’t checked out the game for himself yet, but the concept is promising. Wading through all the indie/electronic groups out there is a daunting task for even the most seasoned music listener.
But what of the actual music quality? The songs are catchy and well produced. There isn’t really a game changer to be found on the Trilingual EP but the fusion of languages is an interesting wrinkle in the fabric. “Nunca,” with its whimsical melting pot of synth beats, glitchy time signatures and dreamy tribal influences is an adventure in an of itself. “Tereza” brings a warm ambience that the Spanish tracks before it did not, giving a much needed fresh boost to the EP. The warm vibes continue with faint whistles (flute? recorder?) leading into a straight up dance tune that would make Daft Punk proud. “Mtn. Tune” has vocalist Hannah Van Loon (or is it Emma Oppen?) sounding like a dead ringer for Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir from Of Monsters and Men. The whole track has a very Of Monsters and Men meets Passion Pit feel to it, actually.
Trails and Ways have a bit of maturing to do when it comes to finding themselves, but the Trilingual EP is a fun one worth picking up.
