Attalus is one of those bands that have just been itching to break out of their local scene for what seems like forever. Small yet widely recognized publications such as the California based Indie Vision Music have been blogging on these guys forever, and guitarist John Sierra found yours truly on Facebook a couple of years ago, when I Am Tuned Up was in its infancy.
The Brighter Side EP is the follow up to the acclaimed Post Tenabras Lux, which promptly placed the band on a small but dedicated group of fans’ radar. This EP is a bit more stripped down than its predecessor, and carries a sunny disposition implied by it’s name. Jazz, progressive rock, and folk influences permeate all three tunes, including the remix of “Shadows of Doubt.” Remix might be somewhat misleading. “Remix” as a label isn’t untrue at all – people may be instead expecting something with a bit more muscle or electronic influence, as is often the case when bands place familiar tunes in the hands of producers once again. “Behind Your Eyes” has a summery jam band feel that would be right at home on a playlist behind moe. or one of their counterparts. The guitar work is subtle but brilliant. “Into the Sea” has a decidedly darker feel, perhaps taking some cues with the tuning of the guitar from the As Cities Burn song of the same name. Seth Davey’s vocals are markedly filled with longing and pensive ponderings.
Attalus is in the midst of finishing up their next full length project and I cannot wait to hear it.
