Guest review by Corey Dickerson (The Cordial Sins)

2013 was a huge year for a lot of amazing bands. My music library grew significantly this past year with new albums from some of my favorite bands as well an assortment of new music. Among that assortment was The Black Angels most recent album, Indigo Meadow.

This album really blew me away with how heavy it was compared to their 2010 release,“Phosgene Nightmare.” It’s really hard to tell what this band is going to set on the table next. I felt like this album is bringing a lot of different sounds and elements that the music industry hasn’t seen in quite some time. With various classic rock influences from The Doors, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd and even some acts it has toured with like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Their first and only single off the record, “ Don’t Play With Guns” has a bit of a poppy yet accessibly dirty chorus with soft instrumentation during the verse. Alex Maas’s vocals on the record aren’t like anything I’ve heard before, and he really makes this album interesting with the different delays and reverbs he used on them. With those vocals over the fuzzy guitar tones, shred nasty keyboard and drone parts and simply brilliant yet tastefully subtle drums this record is no doubt in my mind one of the best to have been released in 2013.

Recently Blue Horizon announced that The Black Angels would be doing a winter tour to support the recent record with Psychedelic rocker, Roky Erickson. Starting off the tour on January 31st at Granada in Lawrence, KS and wrapping it up not to far from home on March 1st in Dallas, TX. Recently I’ve also seen them on some festival dates in the late spring and early summer. With all that being said I know I will not miss them this year because this band is one that has been, and still is doing it right.

The Black Angels are on iTunes and Facebook – check them out!
