7 FemmeFest artists you should watch

By Ryan G

An interesting thing happened in Columbus, Ohio recently. A festival formed in response to another. Without getting into the “why” (you can read all about it on their website) I’m intrigued because I’ve never heard of a festival forming as a direct response to another one. In any case, the festival will be donating all proceeds to the excellent cause of the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence.

Saintseneca

Come on, this one was a no-brainer. Though its hip to like this band (especially if you’re from Ohio) some trends are indeed based in good premises. Zac Little has a very distinctive voice. They’re performing in Strongwater Food and Spirits. Stand in packed room and hear the harmonies echo from the old exposed rafters and brick walls. This performance happens at the aforementioned Strongwater Food and Spirits on Sunday, August 31st.

The Girls!

Don’t you forget that exclamation point. That one dash and dot character is so key to describing the character of this pop punk influenced band that any festival with “femme” in the title would be strongly lacking in power if this band wasn’t on the lineup. The band is still smarting from the sudden loss of guitarist Joey Blackheart and while he’ll never, ever be replaceable you better believe they’ll put on a fierce show. Just spend a couple of minutes watching Reaghan Buchanan bounce up and down with that tambourine while harmonizing and you’ll agree. The band performs at Ace of Cups on Saturday, August 30th.

Time Lords

This band has only one song online but they as if they were in a space beyond their resume. This band has a sound much bigger than the tiny Bossy Grrl’s venue they will be showcasing in, so catch em before word gets out in Columbus! They have a bit of a bluesy sound – but they’re loud. They will perform at a matinee show at Bossy Grrl’s Pin Up Joint on Friday August 29th.

Maza Blaska

This gyspy folk rock collective most recently killed it with Tuned Up past reviewees The Worn Flints and The Cordial Sins. I have no clue why I haven’t seen them live yet, but we decided to take a leap of faith and recommend them to you anyway. If their performance is anything like the Mug and Brush Session they filmed (viewable below) I’m sure you’ll love it. The group will play a matinee set at Kafe Kerouac Sunday August 31st.

Counterfeit Madison

This woman was known to be in so many bands at one point in time she would just show up for gigs and do away with practices completely. Granted, being in fifteen bands doesn’t exactly allow for practice, but the fact of the matter is the talent level present in this human being is so impressive she doesn’t need to practice, really. Watch her expressions onstage. You’ll be captivated by the music and the stage presence. She will open for Saintseneca on Sunday the 31st at Strongwater.

Cosmic Moon

This group, which features Jenny Cosmos, and Jeffrey Kleinman (who also plays for locals Nervosas) is simply listed online with a genre of “sadness.” I’d call it more gothic, but its quite an epic way to express somber tones. I have friends in psychedelic bands that like them, so what does that tell ya? The group will play a matinee set at Little Rock Bar on Saturday August 30th.

Damn the Witch Siren

Come on, you want to see what the band that effectively started the ball rolling on the movement resulting in this fest don’t ya? Don’t ya think they’ll pull out all the stops for this one? Don’t you want to see their new lighting setup (affectionately dubbed “Witch Siren 2.0”)? Why am I asking all of these rhetorical questions? The duo will headline a show at Little Rock Bar on Sunday, August 31st.
