Crowd sourced reviews: Silversun Pickups – “Nightlight”

By Ryan G

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that one of the most anticipated alternative releases for the remainder of 2015 will be Silversun Pickups’ Better Nature. We asked some followers of  Tuned Up their opinion of the massive first single, “Nightlight.”

“Listening to this song the second time through put a huge smile on my face because of how undeniably ‘Silverun Pickups’ it is. The hook is huge, the music video is epic in a way that we rarely see these days. And when the bass kicks in in the chorus…. MMM! So. Satisfying.” – Ryan G.

It’s meh. I miss the days of Carnavas, Swoon, and Kissing Families. Solid albums. All my favorite bands eventually start sucking, given enough fame and time.” – Joshua ‘TI’ Herald, Columbus based film-maker and musician.

“[It’s] a really cool video, but I didn’t bond to the song the way I wanted. It’s a fine song really. I just wanted a new tune to love and this is just missing something for me.” – Koli Meadows, percussion in Get In the Ark.

“These guys are one of my remaining few legitimate favorites. That said, I hope the rest of the album is better. The “best” or most memorable piece of the song is probably in the hook, which I do like, but there isn’t much more that really stands out.

Contextually it could be a great closing track, but from a band that has always put out great singles and albums alike this one doesn’t quite hit the same.” – Nathaniel Grosh, local promoter, photographer (NPXLS) and musician (Conversion Delay).

I never really got into Silversun Pickups, beyond their single “Lazy Eye.” I like how that song went, but I never felt the rest of their catalogue ever really held up to that song. I liken it to ‘Cannonball’ by The Breeders. I liked that song, I never listened to them again. I’m pretty sure I tried listening to their catalogue but it didn’t strike me. I am not surprised this song didn’t strike me because I just don’t think Silversun Pickups makes the kind of music their hit single represents.
