Damn the Witch Siren – Superdelicious

Seeing a title like Superdelicious would tempt many to not take the bearer of this name seriously. Indeed, the clever band name is equally over the top, yet I find it memorable and clever. Unfortunately, I may have been in this group of snobs at one point – had it not been for one pivotal event. I experienced Damn the Witch Siren live. Make no mistake – this band is the catchiest eccentric electro pop group you’ve never heard.

The duo, who go by (and sometimes introduce themselves in real life) as Bobbi Kitten and Z Wolf, are pretty down to earth, friendly people who prefer to reserve their fanfare for the stage. There’s no doubt in my mind that this creativity, held firmly in place most of the time, explodes in the studio (recording and music video spaces alike). Every shrill vocal effect, every dissonant beat, every cheery note, and every bass line (but sparingly used bass drops!) is very deliberately placed.

Superdelicious is at its core a sensual record that is meant to be fun! First single “Honey Honey” has a playful, mischievous vibe that might turn some people off. As someone who has been known to change the station when a song like this has shown up on the radio, I find myself playing this over and over. I feel like I’m breaking some cosmic law by being male and liking this song, but that’s probably the goal. Damn the Witch Siren wants to challenge your preconceived notions of electropop.

Other highlights of the EP are “Tu Sais Je T’aime Bien” and “Life Like Movies.” The latter plays out like a b-side from CHVRCHES’ The Bones of What You Believe, turning down the party vibes and turning up the introspective ethereal themes. It is just as catchy as the rest of the EP, although “Tu Sais…” might be the catchiest thing on here outside of “Honey, Honey.” “Tu Sais…” definitely has the widest appeal of the EP. I could see “Honey Honey” being one of those songs that people either love or love to hate, while the latter is just plain likable. “Silver Forest” is the most experimental of the bunch, while industrial beats (“Pearls and Lace”); a vocoder of sorts (forgive my lack of knowledge on the technical term) and more industrial guitars (“Thrill Me”); and new wave-like structures mixed with some modern EDM influences (“Microphone”) make appearances.

Lyrically, the EP does get a bit racy. This holds me back from enjoying the album a little bit. I don’t mean to sound holier than thou – just being honest. However, as a resident of a city with a huge music talent pool, I believe DTWS is doing something unique within that scene. Superdelicious is club ready, fresh, and I could see these songs becoming anthems.

Damn the Witch Siren is a provocative band. That is, one that wants to provoke you to party.

Score: 3.9/5
