Friends with Elephants have, in an unassuming way, been making a name for themselves around Columbus and surrounding areas for the past few years. The project is the brainchild of Ethan Benton, known to many as a friendly face on the local venue circuit, be it as the doorman, hosting an open mic, or playing onstage himself.
“Lightning Bug” is the latest release from the band. Just in time for summer, the aptly titled “Lightning Bug” contrasts bright guitars with melancholy tones. Sonically, to me this is a metaphor for being torn between celebration of my favorite time of year and mourning the passage of time. The midtempo track is steady but not in a rush. The guitar work of Mike Stokes on the lead and Benton on rhythm is complimentary and atmospheric, with Cameron Reck (bass) and Ross Kiernecki (drums) providing the foundation in a manner that feels understated – but isn’t.
Local producer Jon Fintel continues to add to his impressive resume of midwest alt rock with this song; everything comes together in an almost serendipitous manner.
This would be a good song to play on your porch on a steamy summer’s evening, whilst watching the song’s namesakes blink at you at dusk.
