Gelatinus Cube – The New Corn

By Ryan G

Gelatinus Cube. You are scarce to find a band like them (or named like them). What does Gelatinus Cube make you think of? LSD? Insanity? English slang for some foreign dish? Just a random conglomeration of the American English lexicon (or “linguistic adventure” as Robin Williams might say – see his bit on golf for this reference)? Pat Chase probably knows but he doesn’t want you to.

The New Corn is a tricky record to review because my appreciation for the band arose from their live show and not my initial listening of the band in recorded form. Pat Chase’s nasal vocals certainly have the potential to be polarizing, but his charisma makes up for it.

“Red Snow” might be the most accessible song on the record. With soft yet confident drumming, thoughtful guitar playing and an overall vibe of being pensive, this is the most single-ish tune on the record (and the one) they made a music video for.

“Blood” is probably the most fun song on the album. It has everything you would want in a G Cube song under 3 minutes long – falsettos, rad sax solos, anthemic singing, guitar shredding, and a head bobbing beat. And organ. Can’t forget that organ – with how long it gets in the outro. “Wednesday Adams” has guitar reverb in a ballad, which is something you’re not likely to see a look. A psychedelic power ballad? Who’d-a thunk it?

The real crowd pleaser on here is “The New Corn Suite”, which is eight minutes encompassing six movements. One listen and you’ll be ready to be chanting “Let’s do business!” over and over with the G Cube diehards at a live show. And that horn is gnarly. One of the best minutes on the record, that’s for sure.

The New Corn is not a record that lends itself to passive listening. That might be why this band doesn’t have more fans. But they should. Really. So tap into that adventurous spirit inside of you and do some exploring – do some business with the cube.

The album can be bought on bandcamp. And please please give their Facebook page a like to give them more bragging rights.
