Maybe the Moon – We found this band buried a bit too deep in our email to be considered a current single review, so it’s a “relevant discovery!” This Bay Area indie/electropop duo is engaged to each other just released a free single (which you can download below) and it’s an enjoyable one! The song isn’t airy or ethereal – the vibe is mysterious, foreboding, and groovy. Ok, maybe it’s a little bit ethereal. But the dreamlike mood is definitely portrayed in a way I haven’t heard in a genre that is becoming increasingly oversaturated.

She has a keen ear for good tunes and recommended this band to me a few months. As I suspected, this band has been booked at the Meadery this summer. They have a very catching indie pop meets math rock sound. She manages the groovetastic mathy band Playing to Vapors so the fact that she would recommend Hawking isn’t a surprise. The music of Hawking definitely has an airy feel and you can hear the influence of living in the Canadian portion of the Pacific Northwest.

Shadow Age – I honestly spend a huge chunk of my time listening to music. It is involved in most things I do throughout the day. So needless to say I am always looking for new music. I tend to find it everywhere, from magazines to talking with others at shows. The other morning while checking my email I saw my weekly email from 6131 Records (great label by the way) and the first band mentioned was this band called Shadow Age. 15 years ago the name alone would have caught my attention. However it wasn’t their name, it was the words UK post-punk. Once I saw those words I went straight to their band camp page. And yep sure enough that’s what they sound like. They sound as if they are a leftover UK post-punk band from the 80s. From the first note I got a feel of Joy Division, Magazine, The Fall, Bauhaus, and even The Cure. However here is the thing about this band, they are not from the UK, they are from Richmond, VA. Which makes them more amazing in my book. So if you like I are a fan of the bands I mentioned above, I would highly recommend checking this band out. You will not be disappointed.
