A few years ago I was struck by the ability of a lyricist from Florida who goes by the name Jorrel. It was somewhat of an unconventional environment – a talent show happening in the midst of a board game night at a church conference in Asheville, North Carolina. But I enjoyed the song and got engrossed in the first Lyrical Overflow mixtape the following year.
Jorrel is back about 3 years later with the follow up mixtape, with a newfound maturity and groove. The tape overall is more succinct and places just as much emphasis on high production as it does on the lyrical content. The first mixtape was solid in both areas, but it was definitely less of a project you can move to. When you press play on this one – there’s a sense of uncompromising urgency and in-your-face beats that demand response. “Untamed” is a good example of this, with a beat that is “sick,” as the scene kids say. Aw, who am I kidding, I definitely say that all the time. Even the “Hello” introductory track is not to be reckoned with – it’s a kick to your eardrums right out the gate.
Jorrel takes no compromises in the lyrical content of the mixtape as well. The intro has him calling out fakes with the line “Some say that Christians are just way too soft / Their holy book’s way off, but around your neck’s a cross? (Ironic) / The cross you wear for flair with your apparel is daringly heralded by those preparing for peril.” A relevant line in an era where many symbols are being appropriated for image alone, perhaps? In contrast, the aforementioned track “Untamed” addresses a no-holds-barred approach to faith that also admonishes the listener not to take themselves so seriously, asking “You having fun yet?” in the hook. The rapper also delivers traditional yet powerful messages of Christian faith throughout in a way that isn’t sugarcoated. My personal favorite track might be “Whom Shall I Fear?” for this reason.
It was cool to see an artist that is quietly making tunes mature like this and I would encourage anyone reading to give Lyrical Overflow II a spin.
