KiND – Eunoia

By Ryan G

KiND is a group I first heard about a few months ago when they were announced as a touring band sharing a bill with Columbus electropop duo Damn the Witch Siren at Spacebar. They didn’t end up being able to make the gig, but that announcement served as a point of reference for when Tuned Up got a press release about the band.

The band has so many influences I’m not sure if listing them would serve as a confusing or beneficial anecdote to this review. Eunoia, if I were to guess, means a deeper sense of happiness or joy. Joy at a fundamental, existential level that transcends barriers. This is the vibe we get from these tunes. At all times fun. At all times probing at something deeper.

One of my favorite spots in the US is a certain pair of fountains that welcome city dwellers and tourists alike to Millennium Park in downtown Chicago. The official city of Chicago website describes the landmark, known as “Crown Fountain,” as follows:

The fountain consists of two 50-foot glass block towers at each end of a shallow reflecting pool. The towers project video images from a broad social spectrum of Chicago citizens, a reference to the traditional use of gargoyles in fountains, where faces of mythological beings were sculpted with open mouths to allow water, a symbol of life, to flow out.

A cool place for KiND to perform would be at the center of this fountain. Of course, it would have to be a waterproof stage, but the setting visually embodies all of the characteristics of this band. And the performance would have to be in the dark, of course. The soft glow of the lights reflect the way the music warmly draws you in, the glass and concrete structure reminiscent of the carefully crafted groove – the underbody of the music. The faces and water are like the whimsical elements present in each song. The people that show up implore us to dig deeper into this art installation that could just be an icon of entertainment for the city.

“Electrosphere” and “Axum” are back to back tracks on the south end of the album that especially drive home the philosophy we’ve been discussing. When I first heard the latter, I knew without a doubt I had to get to know these songs better.

Hopefully you feel the same way after reading the above.
