LeBrock – Fuse

By Ryan G

I have to admit, it’s a bit tempting to say that once you’ve heard one synthwave album, you’ve heard them all. But to say that would be doing a vast disservice to the duo known as LeBrock.

For the longest time, I knew of this act only from the “related artists” section on Spotify from listening to The Midnight. By the way, if you haven’t read my over the top review of Monsters yet, you should. The most fun I’ve ever had writing a review.

LeBrock embraces all of the clichés of synthwave and retrowave, emerging with a sound completely their own. A paradox of sorts. This is an album that gets more enjoyable, the more you listen to it. The first couple of tracks served as a sort of palette cleanser for my mood, and then once the album gets to “Interstellar,” my brain is in full-on vibey nostalgia mode. Have I mentioned that Interstellar is one of my favorite movies of all time on this site? I don’t believe I have. “Hollow” makes me wonder if this band are actually time travelers and composed the theme music for that show American Gladiators. “Synthetic” is another highlight, with a soaring chorus and endearing melody. I’m leaving for vacation in a few days and I’m feeling all the things. Okay, that was a tad dramatic, but ya know.

LeBrock’s vocals take some getting used to for me. While the instrumentation is certainly very familiar, I’m more used to the smooth vocals heard in a lot of modern electropop artists and even The Midnight themselves. When listening to LeBrock, my thoughts go toward hair bands of the 80s. Possibly Van Halen.

One thing I haven’t tried yet is driving through the cityscapes with the windows down at night, this album blasting. Next week I’m going to Virginia Beach. You betcha I’m putting this vibe-experiment to the test.

Follow LeBrock on Facebook and Instagram. The album is out now via FiXT Neon.
