What can you say about Less Than Jake? Well, the band has become a powerhouse in the ska/punk scenes since their inception in 1992. They’re legends, and they have a sizable catalogue of albums as their ammunition, albums that are raw and some more polished. And brand new album Silver Linings isn’t a departure or a groundbreaking opus but one that will satisfy some fans who have been there since the start.
Less Than Jake as a collective doesn’t need to alter their sound to fit the masses. Through grit and guts, the band has built a sustainable and admirable reputation as being one of the most sought after outfits in a saturated scene. Many have tried to replicate the Florida act but have failed miserably. Sincerity also goes a long way in the music industry, determination more so and Less Than Jake has that in abundance. Since their debut Losing Streak, which launched in 1996, they’ve pushed the ska/punk sound majestically.
Less Than Jake hasn’t invented a new, earth shattering musical phenomena on Silver Linings. The guitar driven ska template works fine and actually through a more polished production; the album seems more extravagant. Not that there isn’t that punchy rawness still lingering, there is, but it sounds so immaculate. Many fans might disband from listening to the record because of this, but as a whole, Silver Linings keeps the integrity complete.
Silver Linings begins with the brashness we all know and love. That guitar sound blends in well with those ska elements on ”The High Cost Of Low Living.” It’s a great start. ”Keep On Chasing” is lyrically cohesive, conveying a troubling relationship with drugs and love. A dead end is ahead. ”The Test” is a bleak examination. It is lyrically cathartic and one of the most poetic songs to date from the act. That chugging guitar sequence doesn’t halt until the song stops. ”Move” is a ballad of sorts, slow in its build up, but highly infectious. Again, there’s a commanding riff.
Less Than Jake hasn’t reinvented the wheel with Silver Linings. But they’ve kept the ball rolling and the music sincere, and that’s all they really need to do.
