Trevor St Aubin (known to many simply as Saint Aubin) has been a dominant force in and around the Indianapolis area for several years now, but with “Anchors Break,” the indie artist is poised to capture hearts and minds far beyond the confines of the Hoosier State. 2019’s Losing Control saw Saint Aubin departing from the sonic roots of the band’s first EPs in favor of a synth-based disposition, and his newest single is a solidifying step further in this direction. Stylistically “Anchors Break” sits right at the crossroads of electro rock and indie pop, boasting this driving bass groove (all throughout really, but particularly on the song’s bridge) and a steady stomp on the soaring chorus. The intensely powerful instrumentation serves as the perfect musical backdrop for Trevor’s pensive lyrics, where the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist laments that “wishing won’t bring you back.” The entire mood of the track makes me feel like I’m listening to Vesperteen, another favorite of the blog, albeit with significantly heavier, vibier leanings. Consequently, “Anchors Break” is a tune I see myself coming back to over and over again, even as the year continues to progress.
