Review: Dowsing – I Don’t Even Care Anymore (2013)

Emo is a term that has been getting tossed around a lot, especially in the past few years. It is a musical genre that is very misunderstood.  When people ask me about emo bands they may know, Jimmy Eat World is the best example I can give them. Dowsing is a band that can help change that. This 5 piece from Chicago has been around for a few years in the underground fighting and clawing trying to make a name for their selves.

On what is their third release, I Don’t Even Care Anymore, for Count Your Lucky Stars Dowsing has crafted what very well could turn out to be a defining record of their genre.  In fifteen years this record will be mentioned in the same breath as The Power Of Failing by Mineral,  Frame and Canvas by Braid, Diary by Sunny Day Real Estate and of course Clarity by Jimmy Eat World. All of these records played an important part in the progression of emo in some shape, form, or fashion. The role that I Don’t Even Care Anymore will play is it will help revive this genre. Many have thought it was dead. However with this release Dowsing has showed that emo is very well alive in 2013.

The first track, “If I Fall Asleep the Cats Will Find Me” sets the mood perfectly for this album. With the sound of that very first chord I knew this was the sound I have been missing. In the next few bars when the vocals start I was instantly taking back to the first time I heard The Get Up Kids. The lyrics to the song are very simple but effective. It is the same thing repeated throughout the song, “Will I Make it Through You”.  The song is one that is slow and and laid back. It is the slowest song on the album.  The rest of the album is a little faster. One of the best tracks on the album is “Where’re Here To Basketball”. The track has a very upbeat tempo to go along with catchy lyrics. These lyrics include,”when the dishes pile up I’ll do them in the morning” and “I need a friend not a relationship ‘cause I’m the worse kind of person.” The track also has some of the most honest lyrics I’ve heard in a while.  The other thing that stands out about this album is the growth on their instruments. This is a band that has always been good in that department but they have grown with this release.  Look no further than the track “everything works out”. This track is 2:47 long and 1 minutes and 30 seconds of it are instrumental. I would have been happy if the entire track was. It has a very calm feeling about it.

Dowsing may not be the best band at what they do but the do it well. Well enough to be known and change the scope of this genre for years to come. This release will leave the listener wanting more. This is just the start for this young band.
