Evan Andree is a young experienced artist seeking to break out from the indie scene. From the sound of the EP, it looks like he may be on his way. With experience opening for I AM TUNED UP favorites Paper Route and O’Brother, how could we ignore this release? Be assured that despite the poppy direction on this most recent release, Andree succeeds in crafting a short on time but heavy on sustenance EP. This certainly isn’t for everyone, but odds are most would find it enjoyable.
Apparently despite Evan’s very indie status, others already agree with his potential to appeal to many. Nike UK recently used a song of his, “Panic,” in a recent marketing campaign. Now, this song isn’t on the record but the same principle ought to apply here, right? Yup. “American Girl” is unsurprisingly a song of romance that had me perhaps cringing a teeny bit at the cheese. Then again, I listen to plenty of tunes with “cheesy” lyrics that just come in a different package, so objectively I really cannot complain about the tune. The final song “Mr Teleportation” is my favorite, because it has two things I like – straightforward rock and roll, and a weird title. Those close to me know I’m all about weirdness! Anyway, the EP finds its happy medium with “Your Song,” another love song with an odd sense of familiarity. Evan’s vocals here have a bit of distortion thats whimsically appealing. In short (as if this review wasn’t short already) the EP provides a suitable snapshot into what makes Evan Andree tick as an indie pop artist, most notably where his aspirations lie.
