As a musician I am constantly hearing the names of bands and artists I should check out, but never getting the opportunity to listen to half of them. Jamestown Revival was one of them. A few months ago I heard the name and did not think anything of it; I gave them my ear’s “cold shoulder” and went on with my life. After listening to their release The California EP, I can very easily say that I made a mistake not looking into their music sooner, when I had the chance.

What is cool about Jamestown Revival is how musically diverse their songs are on the album. To the normal, non-musically trained ear, listeners would be quick to acclaim “every song sounds the same”; I’m here to let you know that that is far from true. Take a 1960’s folk singer—the singer-songwriter’s who took the cheapest instrument (an acoustic guitar) and their rarely spectacular voices to get a story or meaning across with their poetic and deep-developed lyricism. Jamestown is bringing this all back in such an amazing way; add the close-knit harmonies of country, a banjo, harmonica, slide guitar, and a kick drum driven beat and you will find this genre of Country Folk Blues that I would place them within. In this album I would have liked to see a little more change in the style from song to song, for those not familiar with the musical geniuses in each piece; however, it is the deep appreciators of music who are listening and sharing the work of this quickly rising group, so for now, what they are doing should be just fine.

If you like country, folk, the blues, singer/songwriters, indie, alternative, or even easy listening music, I can almost guarantee that you will enjoy the sounds that these men are creating. I expect an even more developed and mature sound in their next release, so plan on becoming more and more familiar with their name because they are definitely going places. The California EP is a ‘hands down’ great addition to any music library.
