Hailing from Nashville’s emo and punk scene, Nest is one of two bands which are product of disbanded Veritas. The other being Better Off, currently on tour with Major League. Nest and Better Off periodically play shows together in the Nashville area, but enough about the two and it’s time to focus on Nest’s most recent EP titled ‘Hadal’.

The EP was recorded in Atlanta’s renowned Glow in the Dark studios where other bands such as As Cities Burn, The Chariot, and many more have recorded. To say Nest’s EP is up there with these legends wouldn’t be too far fetched. Yes, this EP has a darkness to it. After all, the term Hadal does refer to parts of ocean trenches which lay 6000 feet below the earth’s surface.

The ‘Hadal’ EP could be best described as a dark adventure led by erie vocals and guitar riffs. With the use of tempo and time changes one can feel the environment change around them as the music leads them along. Vocally it’s like their speaking directly to the listener in a logical manner, like their walking them through a process.

The EP has a great start with an environmental feel but what’s better is the end. ‘Lamia’ is a fifty-three second song leading into ‘Hands in a Hole’, the last leg of this musical experience. Within these fifty-three seconds it is made clear that the listener has arrived at what Nest wants to be a big ending.  Adventures do need big endings, and luckily this one has it. With an overwhelming climax the listener is left almost feeling alone with a faint “trust your instincts…” repeating in the background.

‘Hadal’ is proof of Nest’s ability to create gratifying music with just a five song EP.   There was one transition in ‘Stairs-Stares” that felt a bit jagged. Overall though Nest has done an incredible job and this EP deserves a listen and a purchase, if one feels so inclined to support good music.
