U2 – “Invisible”: The first single off U2’s long awaited 2014 LP proves that the band has still got it. I might even venture to say that it supersedes other ‘recent’ singles from the band’s long career such as “Vertigo” and “Get On Your Boots.” Distorted synth is the backdrop for an intro that reminds me of “Beautiful Day.” There’s nothing radically different about “Invisible” but it’s the U2 everyone loves.
[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjsNj2AyjXA&h=297&w=450]Isken Cosip – “Sweetheartbreaker”: Cutesy indie pop is the name of the game with this track – the first single off the singer’s forthcoming release it’s pronounced [eye-ken]. The heartwarming falsettos and guitar plucking will induce eye rolling in some and swooning in others. Fortunately for Cosip, “Sweetheartbreaker” leans on the smart side of the romantically cheesy. Tweens and adults alike could dig this.
[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/127218773″ params=”color=6dbcb9″ width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]The Orphan, The Poet – “Starlight”: In what is being called by some the best song written and/or released by TOTP yet, “Starlight” doesn’t have a chorus as immediately catchy as “Theives Beneath The Bed” yet what the song lacks in immediate memorability it makes up for in raw ferocity and staying power. The rhythm section is huge. I’m stoked for what’s to come from these guys.
[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGTAS7ci-DI&h=297&w=450]Yellowson – “Collateral”: The latest in a trend of progressive/ambient rock bands that take hints from Brand New, Thrice and Circa Survive is Columbus’ Yellowson, who will be making their major live debut alongside rising stars and genre counterparts The Orphan the Poet and OceanSpeak, along with emo band History’s History. Intricate guitar work, spot on production and a steady rhythm section all show promise for this group. The vocals sound a lot like Aaron Newberry from SONS fame, actually. So that’s a bit weird but oh, well.
