This Grand Rapids Folk-Rock band is fairly new to the music scene, but they are already making themselves known. As I sit here listening to Watching For Foxes EP The Watchmen drinking a hot coffee on a cold and rainy day, I am excited for the approaching winter. This folk EP will warm you from the inside out. The Watchmen EP is a great representation of folk music with just the slightest hint of grunge. Time to break out your flannel shirts, winter hats and boots, start up your fireplace, and grab a cup of coffee to relax and enjoy this EP.
My favorite track on the EP is Howl; it only makes sense for a band called Watching For Foxes to have a song with harmonizing howls in it. I sometimes forget that these guys are Michigan natives because the flow of the vocals can be so reminiscent of Irish folk music.
Overall, the writing on this EP really stands out. The title track is the strongest evidence to that point. The lyrics and flow will grip you into the story line of the song. Watching For Foxes doesn’t compromise listenability for substance.
If you are anything like me, you tend to rotate your music selections with the season. This EP will happily find its place among my winter selections like Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Elliott Smith, and Fleet Foxes. I am very excited to see what else this young band has in store for their future with such a strong EP already under their belt.
Watching For Foxes is on Facebook, and you can buy their EP here.
