Audiofeed 2017 preview: Hotel Neon

By Ryan G

I was just surfing YouTube and happened upon the Inception ending scene. If you haven’t watched that movie, know that Hans Zimmer has evoked one of the most powerful pieces of music to close out a film that I’ve ever heard. The feeling evoked from that happenstance viewing is definitely shaping my feelings right now as I listen to Hotel Neon for the first time.

The music walks a line somewhere between post-rock and drone. This feeling is also similar to the feeling I had when I listened to my first album of 2017 – from none other than Brian Eno. The music is somber yet hopeful. My mind’s eye is staring into darkness yet I feel warm inside.

Hotel Neon will be making their Audiofeed debut this year. Get to know the band a little bit below, via our interview with them and streaming a track.

What’s your favorite Audiofeed memory? If you haven’t been yet, what are you looking forward to?

Steven: Though I’ve wanted to attend Audiofeed for some time, this will be my first time at the festival. I’m looking forward to the community and the sharing of art.

If any band that no longer exists could headline a show you play, who would it be?

Andrew: I’d love to witness Erik Satie’s piece “Vexations,” performed by the composer himself.

What records and/or songs have had heavy rotation these past few months for you?

Michael: There’s been so much amazing music released lately, but some standouts for me have been: Ryan Adams’ “Prisoner”; Slowdive’s self-titled; and High Plains’ “Cinderland”.

Describe your music with language as if you’re ordering a five course meal.

Steven: I don’t eat too many fancy meals like that but I could describe it in a beer flight breakdown. Since our music is generally filled with growing swells & intensities I’ll start small and get bigger. 1)IPA 2)Saison 3)Porter 4)Barleywine 5)Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout

Do you remember the first album you purchased/received? What was it?

Andrew: I don’t know if it was the “first,” but the one that got me interested in music, and the one I most clearly remember, is the self-titled debut album from the Ramones. It made me want to play guitar.

Who on the Audiofeed lineup (other than your band), has a don’t miss set?

You can only pick one (or two).Michael: I’m slightly biased because we’re touring with him, but don’t miss Lowercase Noises. Andy’s so talented and the interplay between the audio & visual elements in his live set makes for a powerful experience.

Have you ever come across an exceptionally good (or bad) tattoo job? What was it?

Steven: I’ve only had one tattoo experience myself and it was great! I’d like to get another very soon. As far as bad, my wife has a friend who took a trip to Greece and wanted to have the text “Forgiven” in Greek tattooed on his back. He should have worked with a better translator because he instead has “I’m Sorry” in Greek on his back. I’d say that is my favorite BAD tattoo story I know of.

Are there any summer movies you’re especially looking forward to this year?

Andrew: I am not a big movie buff, so not really. The only thing on my radar is the new Star Wars movie coming in December.

What’s the ONE THING your music is trying to communicate to the world?

Michael: I wouldn’t say we’re trying to convey any particular message with our music- everyone experiences and interprets it differently, sometimes even from one listen to the next, and we love that. We just encourage our listeners to slow down and embrace whatever the music happens to make them feel.
