Cloud City preview: it’s (i)

By Ryan G

Following the development of Cloud City has opened my eyes to a whole new side of the Columbus scene. I like to think I’m pretty good at keeping my ears to the ground on what’s up and coming around these parts, so when I discover a whole new scene, I think “well, shoot. what’s up with that? I need to do better.”

There are new scenes, and there are the tastemakers that run those scenes. Once you find them you discover pretty quick who acts as a gatekeeper to that scene. Usually, those folks are artists themselves. One such tastemaker is Isaiah Boyd, part of a musical project known as it’s (i).

it’s (i) released a record earlier this year titled Beachgod1. If you take a moment to get to know it’s (i), you’ll gather pretty quickly that this artist operates with depth—it’s as normal as breathing. The mantra of it’s (i) seems to be that getting into the groove is awesome, and so is getting deep in thought. This record in particular is interspersed with interludes that sound like they’re out of a sci-fi film. An ethereal voice converses with it’s (i) about achieving enlightenment. Everyone can relate to the journey of becoming your best self, and it’s (i) communicates this with a dose of mystery and humor.

I’m not really sure what to expect from a live performance of it’s (i). I’m expecting it to be otherworldly but not overly so. Important but not haughty. I’m expecting that Cloud City co-mastermind Cassie Young will probably be involved in someway. I’m impressed with how polished the brand and sound of it’s (i) is already and am stoked for the live show. Like others on the bill, we sent this artist our Q&A—dive into the personality of it’s (i) more below.

Tuned Up: The premise of Cloud City is that of a city built by artists. What role in the city government would you serve, if not a musician?

it’s (i): Hahaha I don’t have an answer to this question.

Your music is a beverage. What’s in it?

A tea bag full of grated psychedelic mushrooms and assorted herbs that help my blood flow and most likely hot water.

What aspect of Cloud City are you most looking forward to?

The Meditation Den and my performance.

2019 has seen many amazing releases. What has been on repeat for you from this year?

BEACHGOD1 by it’s (i) lol

What defunct band do you want to reunite?

Ha! Typical answer: but Nirvana.

What is your hot spot in Columbus? Why?

I’m a hermit, and like my own energy, so right now it’s home, but anytime I step out it’s a hot moment.

What posture or circumstance most inspires your creativity?

I’m generally inspired by dramatic or spiritual circumstances in my life.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Cookies and Cream.
