I’ll forewarn ya – this isn’t going to be a drawn out review.
The duo is dark electronica, in case you didn’t know. Their facebook description says “EBM Coldwave industrial post punk Electronic” but let’s settle with dark electronic, shall we?
If you’re sensing a bit of snark in the tone of this write-up it’s definitely at least somewhat a result of listening to the appropriately title No Pop. This record is engaging but not really that accessible. It is mostly straightforward with some jarring left turns thrown in. Those left turns for the most part consist of abrupt time signature changes and/or changes in volume. You settle into a groove and suddenly your eardrum is proverbially getting punched in the face – that’s what we’re dealing with, here.
The whole time, there’s a tone that goes beyond foreboding into outright doom. In a macabre sort of way, it can be beautiful. Yet, for the most part this record is aggressive. I made the mistake of reading some rather morbid articles on Reddit while listening to this album and that experience might be forever linked to these songs. I hope I’ll be able to separate some of those odd feelings from this music but I’m doubtful.
All of this being said, I find the record to be quite compelling and would be very interested in experiencing this band’s live show. I’d imagine they’d conjure some dark ethereal visuals to compliment their sound. I’d like to see them close their shows they way they do this record – a haunting repeating melody hanging in the air, abruptly coming to a halt without giving the listener a true sense of resolution.
