The Skulx – self-titled

Words: Bobby Brunner

Recently, as the weather seems to be changing, I find myself surfing through music that would probably put myself and those around me to sleep. Not only was I pleasantly surprised when I plugged in my headphones to listen to the new 9-track, self-titled release by The Skulx, but I was jolted by a charge of energy roaring through my head.

Let’s talk about one of my personal favorites on this release, “Suckin’ on Stars”. I can only describe this song as being “vibrant.” I mean, I truly feel that this song has a certain sound that I can’t quite illustrate. Drums accompany the heavy and steady guitar rhythm and combine to create this poppy, rooted, percussive sound, that, when mixed with the sound of brass instruments, opens up this fun, creative drive that I find in brass bands.

Anytime I am struck with the sound combination of energetic Rock n’ Roll and dynamic brass instruments, I literally get chills up my spine, so personally this album is right up my ally.  For example, in the track Big Bam the brass accompaniment is soft, yet so utterly present. The Skulx definitely found the perfect balance between heavy rock, and groovy brass.

The energy that is created throughout this whole album starts with the very first track, and is consistent until the last track. Each song is so incredibly diverse in terms of overall music genre. Going from Big Bam to Patch That Hole, is kind of like going from 70’s and 80’s rock, to Folk incorporating new instrument such as banjo, and tambourine. I like this diversity, this is a display for individual talent that seems to be lacking for other musicians producing music these days.

Sure, I enjoyed listening straight through the album, but I also enjoyed letting the album shuffle through as I drove to and from work, and class. Overall I would say this album is not something I would find myself listening to as I am trying to relax, or concentrate. However, if you need to wake up, get on the road, and get some work done, The Skulx have ya’ covered.
