Columbus Covers Columbus ’19: Courtney From Work

One of the cool things about local scenes is when new bands form. It’s always so exciting. Especially when there is a lot of talk abut said band. That is the case with Courtney from Work. I remember when I first started seeing the name, it was often. But I never listened or saw them live. Then I started hearing about their live show more and more. I still never saw them. Shame on me. Then I finally saw them, and I was blown away. This is rock at its purest form. I loved every fucking minute of their set. So the moral of the story is don’t mess up like Cobra did. Make sure you checkout their set on Saturday January 19th at 8:10. See you there!!!!

TUNED UP: Can you please introduce yourself?

Courtney from Work: We are Courtney from Work. Our band is lead singer and guitarist Jake Fournier, drummer Andrew Davis, bassist Conner Hannah, and guitarist Colin Cavanaugh.

What made you and your band want to participate in this festival?

The Columbus music scene is near and dear to our little hearts, and we wanted to take on the challenge of learning how to play some songs by our favorite local bands.

What is next for you and your band?

Jake: We’re working on recording a full-length album right now, and we’re going to try to play a ton of shows to support it.

What is your favorite venue to play in Columbus? Hidden Gem?

Jake: My favorite venues are The Basement and A&R Music Bar.

Colin: My favorite place to play has to be Donato’s Basement.  I don’t know how “hidden” it is, but the Tree Bar is definitely a gem.

 Conner: Any PromoWest venue.

If there were a Columbus Music Hall of Fame, what three acts would you induct?

CFW: Andrew: Willie Phoenix is one of them. Also Twenty One Pilots, as much as I don’t want to.

Jake: I guess Beartooth then.

Conner: I’d also say Willie Phoenix. My grandpa played bass for Willie for most of his life. Grew up with him since he was 16. Watershed and Royale Cresent Mob too.

Who are some local acts our readers should be listening to?

Girl Fox, Cousin Simple, Radattack, The Turbos, Tango Moms, and the Worn Flints are all great.

What is your favorite winter activity?

Jake: Rocking and rolling.

Colin: Taking naps.

Andrew: Overwatch.

What is your favorite winter drink?

Jake: Coffee for me.

Conner: Orange juice after brushing my teeth.

Andrew: Four Loko Gold.

I am a huge fan of covers; what is your all-time favorite cover?

Jake: My favorite cover is “Frances Bean Will Rule the World” by FIDLAR.

Conner: Grateful Dead covering the Rolling Stones, “It’s All Over Now.”

Colin: I think my favorite cover ever is Dance Gavin Dance’s cover of “Semi-Charmed Life.”

Andrew: Smash Mouth’s cover of “My Shiny Teeth and Me,” originally by Chip Skylark.

I also have a few songs that I feel should never be covered. Do you have any songs that you feel should not, and if so what are they?

Andrew: Anything by KISS or AC/DC. One version is already too many.

Colin: Wonderwall. Nobody needs a cover of that.

Conner: Any Beatles song, just let it be.

If you had to eat one sandwich for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Colin: Cold Cut Combo from Subway. I could happily eat one every day.

Andrew: My diet consists of only liquids, as I have no teeth. This question is offensive.

Jake: Do burritos count?
