Evanescence – The Bitter Truth

You could place symphonic rock band Evanescence amongst the bands that redefined the genre back the early 2000s. The act is hallowed by some and is a band that released one of the most popular songs ever in Bring Me To Life. The song was an instant hit, catapulting Evanescence to superstardom, making them a household name in the scene. Although, Bring Me To Life is their staple, their go to juggernaut, there are plenty other diamonds in the rough and ammo in the cannon.

Straight to 2021, and Evanescence seem invigorated and ready for the challenge of spearheading another revolution. Lead by the enigmatic Amy Lee, a singer/songwriter blessed with an angelic singing voice, the band has The Bitter Truth as their signal, their monumental charge for something more than glory, but for closure. On The Bitter Truth, there are moments when Lee sounds disenchanted and broken-hearted. She raises her voice like a sail, and then it is subtle.

The Bitter Truth is their step into rediscovering the fire of the early days. A flame so fierce and glowing. Yes, Evanescence fell off the wagon for a while and became an act many forgot about, but with their new direction and album, they are once again showered in relevance. This relevance is fundamental, and these songs more than significant.

Broken Pieces Shine starts off the LP. Such a symphonic melting pot of tension and instrumental balance. Guitars are played ferociously, and Lee’s voice is ever so palatable. She craves to feel alive more than ever. The Game Is Over offers drums aplenty and an engrossing riff, with Lee’s vocals interlocking well. She is pushed to breaking point, as the chorus lands like a million meteors. Feeding The Dark draws influence from yesteryear. It wouldn’t be out of place on 2003’s Fallen. It nips, and the chorus is gloriously loud. Wasted On You has a trademark vocal performance by Lee, and she is frozen in time, trying to tear through it all. The backdrop is thrilling, as the instrumentals add a needed chime.

Evanescence is a legendary band, there is no doubt about that. With The Bitter Truth, they embark and conquer. The album isn’t a blot on the page of mediocrity; it is a triumphant return.
